From their first appearance in the late 1930s, the ability of comic books to help children learn how to read has been widely recognized. As the decades rolled on and the medium evolved, classrooms from grade schools to colleges began incorporating not only comics but other elements of Geek Culture into their curriculums as well. As a result, a number of non-profits have sprung up in recent years to help facility the movement, using everything from comics to cosplay to video games to assist in the education process.

Cosplay for Science Initiative

Since 2017, a group of professional scientists having been using cosplay to connect with fans of popular culture and show how real science relates to many of their favorite fictional universes.

Graphic Medicine International Collective

The non-profit serves as a community for proponents of Graphic Medicine, a growing field that combines comics with healthcare as a way to educate and improve communication with patients.

Pop Culture Classroom

The Denver-based non-profit has been using pop culture as an education tool since 2010, finding success with their Storytelling Through Comics curriculum and downloadable history comics.

Popular Culture Association

During the 1960s, Professor Ray Browne and a few of his colleagues embarked on a campaign to bring popular culture into academia, forever changing the educational landscape as a result.

Reading With Pictures

The non-profit was founded in 2009 and published a series of education-oriented graphic novel textbooks, as well as becoming one the leading advocates for the use of comics in the classroom.

TeachRock

The brainchild of rock musician Steve Van Zandt, the non-profit organization has developed over 200 lesson plans that use music to teach everything from history to science to mathematics.
